Ingredients
- 12 sheets of filo dough (1 pack)
- 150 g chopped hazelnuts
- ½ jar of Hazelnut Praline
- 100 g melted butter
- 200 g sugar
- 200 g water
- 100 g honey
- Peel of 1 lemon or orange
- 1 cinnamon stick
Method
- Preheat your oven to 180° C.
- Start by preparing the simple syrup: combine all the ingredients in a pot, bring to a boil, stir, and then turn off the heat and let cool to room temperature.
- Gather all ingredients for building the baklava. Once you open the the package of filo pastry, immediately cover the sheets with a slightly damp (not wet) towel. This will prevent them from drying out. Trim the sheets according to your oven dish if needed.
- Butter the bottom of your oven dish.
- Take 2 sheets of filo dough and place a thin rolling pin at the base. Brush the top surface evenly with butter. Spread the chopped hazelnuts and 2 tbsp of hazelnut praline evenly on the surface of the dough. Then, using the rolling pin, gently roll the dough all the way to create a long roll and then carefully slide the rolling pin off. Avoid making it too tight which will make it harder to slide off the rolling pin.
- Place your rolled baklava onto your oven dish, and repeat the previous step 5 more times, or however many it takes to fill up your dish.
- Cut your rolls in whichever shape you would like. Then, generously brush the tops and sides of the rolls with melted butter.
- Place into your oven, for around 45 minutes, or until it is nicely golden brown all around.
- As soon as you take out your baklava from the oven, pour the simple syrup on top evenly. Let cool at least 3-4 hours before enjoying.
- To serve, spoon some more Hazelnut-Berry Praline and sprinkle chopped nuts on top.
